Age Calculator

Find exact chronological age in years, months, weeks, and days.

How It Works

Chronological age is determined by counting complete calendar years, followed by complete calendar months since the last birthday, and finally the remaining days in the current month.

Unlike naive calculators that divide elapsed days by 365.25 (which produces drifting fractional ages and incorrect birthdays), EverydayNumbers counts exact Gregorian calendar anniversaries with correct month-end borrowing.

Formula & Calculation

Calendar Age Decomposition

Age = Completed Years + Completed Months + Remaining Days
Years=Full 12-month periods elapsed since date of birth
Months=Completed months elapsed since most recent birthday
Days=Remaining days elapsed since most recent monthly anniversary

When borrowing days across months of differing lengths, the exact day count of the preceding calendar month is used.

Next Birthday Countdown

Days Remaining = TargetBirthday − CurrentDate
TargetBirthday=Next upcoming anniversary of month and day
CurrentDate=Today or chosen calculation date

For leap day babies (Feb 29), non-leap year anniversaries fall on March 1 by standard legal convention.

Step-by-Step Example

Worked Example

Calculate age on October 1, 2024, for someone born on May 15, 1995:

Step 1: Count full completed years: May 15, 1995 → May 15, 2024→ 29 completed years
Step 2: Count full completed months: May 15, 2024 → September 15, 2024→ 4 completed months (Jun, Jul, Aug, Sep)
Step 3: Count remaining days: September 15, 2024 → October 1, 2024 (15 days left in Sep + 1 day in Oct)→ 16 days

Total chronological age is 29 years, 4 months, and 16 days (10,732 total elapsed days).

Assumptions & Edge Cases

  • Date-Only Calendar Arithmetic: Calculations use pure Gregorian calendar dates without time-of-day offsets, preventing unexpected day-shifts caused by local daylight saving transitions or UTC conversion.
  • Leap Year Birthdays (February 29): For individuals born on February 29 during a leap year, standard legal conventions observe non-leap anniversaries on March 1.
  • Month-End Borrowing: When computing intervals across unequal months (such as January 31 to February 28), borrowing uses the actual number of days in the preceding month rather than a generic 30-day assumption.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my age in days differ on some websites?

Many online tools naively divide total days by 365 or 365.25. Our tool counts every actual calendar day and leap day individually, ensuring exact legal and astronomical accuracy.

How does the calculator handle dates in the future?

If an "As of" date earlier than the date of birth is selected, the tool alerts the user with an inline validation message indicating the date must be in the future of the birth date.
