Measurement Standards & Unit Distinctions

Unit conversions are performed using international standard definitions (SI and ISO) without premature floating-point truncation.

Important Distinctions:

  • US vs. Imperial Volume: A US gallon is exactly 231 cubic inches (~3.785 L), whereas an Imperial gallon is 10 pounds of water at 62°F (~4.546 L). Never treat them as interchangeable.
  • Data Storage (SI vs. IEC): Decimal SI prefixes (MB, GB, TB) use powers of 10 (1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes). Binary IEC prefixes (MiB, GiB, TiB) use powers of 2 (1 GiB = 1,073,741,824 bytes).
  • Absolute Zero: Temperatures cannot physically fall below absolute zero (-273.15°C, -459.67°F, or 0 Kelvin).
