Days Between Dates Calculator

Count total elapsed days, weeks, and weekdays between two calendar dates.

How It Works

The Days Between Dates Calculator computes the total continuous day count between two dates without month-boundary approximations.

It also breaks down the total days into weekdays (Monday through Friday), weekend days (Saturday and Sunday), and whole weeks, with optional inclusive counting.

Formula & Calculation

Elapsed Day Counting Method

Elapsed Days = JulianDay(EndDate) − JulianDay(StartDate)
JulianDay=Continuous integer count of astronomical calendar days
Inclusive (+1)=Optional addition of 1 day to count both boundary dates

Integer Julian day arithmetic is independent of local daylight saving transitions and clock adjustments.

Step-by-Step Example

Worked Example

Calculate elapsed days from January 1, 2024, to December 31, 2024 (leap year):

Step 1: Exclusive day difference: Dec 31, 2024 − Jan 1, 2024→ 365 elapsed days
Step 2: Inclusive count (both days counted): 365 + 1 day→ 366 total days
Step 3: Weekday and weekend tally: 52 full weeks + Monday and Tuesday→ 262 business weekdays, 104 weekend days

The span contains 365 elapsed days (or 366 days inclusive), encompassing 262 weekdays and 104 weekend days.

Assumptions & Edge Cases

  • Exclusive vs. Inclusive Counting: Standard elapsed counting answers "how many days have passed between Monday and Tuesday?" (1 day). Inclusive counting answers "how many days am I scheduled to work on Monday and Tuesday?" (2 days).
  • Public Holidays: This tool separates Saturdays and Sundays from weekdays. For official national holiday exclusions, use our dedicated Business Days Calculator.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do leap years have 366 days?

Earth takes approximately 365.2422 days to orbit the Sun. Adding an extra day every 4 years (with century exceptions) keeps our civil calendar synchronized with astronomical seasons.
