How It Works

The Business Days Calculator computes the number of working business days (Monday through Friday) between two calendar dates, or calculates a projected future completion date by adding working days.

It optionally excludes official statutory public holidays for the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia, accounting for weekend shifts and Easter Computus rules.

Formula & Calculation

Business Days Counting Formula

Working Days = Total Elapsed Weekdays − Observed Public Holidays
Total Elapsed Weekdays=All calendar days falling on Monday through Friday
Observed Public Holidays=Official statutory holidays falling on weekdays during the span
Inclusive (+1)=Optional addition of 1 day to count both start and end dates

Adding Business Days

Target Date = Advance calendar day-by-day until N working days are accumulated
Saturdays & Sundays=Always skipped
Official Holidays=Skipped if holiday exclusion filter is active

Adding 10 business days starting on a Monday lands exactly two weeks later on the Monday of the third week.

Step-by-Step Example

Example: 10 Business Days from Monday, Jan 8, 2024 (US Federal)

Adding 10 business days with US Federal Holidays enabled:

Step 1: Week 1 (Jan 8–12): Mon, Tue, Wed, Thu, Fri = 5 working days→ 5 accumulated days
Step 2: Monday, Jan 15 (Martin Luther King Jr. Day): US Federal Holiday → Skipped→ 5 accumulated days
Step 3: Resume Week 2 (Jan 16–19): Tue, Wed, Thu, Fri = 4 working days→ 9 accumulated days
Step 4: Reach Day 10 on Monday, Jan 22: Mon, Jan 22 = 1 working day→ 10 accumulated days (Target Date)

Adding 10 business days to Jan 8, 2024, lands on Monday, January 22, 2024.

Assumptions & Edge Cases

  • Weekend Shift Rules: When fixed holidays (such as New Year's Day or Christmas) fall on a Saturday or Sunday, government rules shift the official day off to the preceding Friday or following Monday. EverydayNumbers implements these exact legal substitution rules.
  • Easter Computus Algorithm: Floating Christian holidays (Good Friday, Easter Monday) are calculated dynamically using the astronomical Gregorian Computus algorithm.
