Working Hours Calculator
Calculate net billable hours and timesheet totals between any two dates and times. Configure daily shift schedules, unpaid lunch breaks, active workdays, and public holiday exclusions.
Deducted on days with at least 5.0 hours of shift overlap
Statutory public holidays will be excluded from working hours.
Total calculated over 5 working days. Unpaid break of 60 minutes deducted on days with at least 5.0 hours of shift overlap.
How the Working Hours Calculation Works
The Working Hours Calculator evaluates each calendar date in your selected period independently against your configured schedule. Rather than simply multiplying days by fixed hours, it computes the exact chronological overlap between the requested interval and each day’s defined shift hours.
Shift Overlap Formula & Break Policy
1. Daily Overlap Formula
On the first day, work time begins at whichever is later: the requested start time or standard shift start. On the final day, work time ends at whichever is earlier: the requested end time or standard shift end.
2. Unpaid Break Policy
To mirror standard labor standards, unpaid breaks (e.g. 60-minute lunch) are deducted only when a daily shift overlap meets or exceeds 5.0 hours (300 minutes). Short partial shifts under 5 hours do not have breaks deducted.
Worked Examples
- Gross daily time: 8 hours (09:00 to 17:00 = 480 minutes).
- Daily unpaid lunch: 60 minutes (deducted because 8.0h ≥ 5.0h).
- Net daily working time: 7.0 hours (420 minutes).
- Total for 5 days: 35.00 net working hours (35 hrs 0 mins).
- Monday: 13:00 to 17:00 = 4.0 hours (240 minutes).
- Break rule: 4.0 hours is under the 5.0-hour threshold, so no lunch break is deducted. Net time for Monday = 4.0 hours.
- Tuesday through Friday: 4 full days × 7.0 hours = 28.0 hours.
- Total weekly time: 32.00 net working hours (32 hrs 0 mins).
Assumptions & Edge Cases
- Weekend & Non-Working Days: Any day not checked in the active working days list contributes 0 hours to the total, regardless of entered clock times.
- Public Holidays: When a holiday region is selected, recognized statutory public holidays occurring on scheduled workdays are omitted and counted as holidays skipped.
- Interval Outside Shift: If timestamps fall entirely outside daily shift hours (e.g. 18:00 to 22:00 for a 09:00–17:00 shift), 0 hours are recorded.
- Decimal Precision: Decimal hours are computed with decimal-safe arithmetic and rounded to two decimal places (e.g. 7 hours 30 minutes = 7.50 hours; 7 hours 20 minutes = 7.33 hours).
